Funeral services where held Friday morning, Sept. 2, at Capital City Baptist Church in Des Moines for Andy E. McComb, 76, of the Des Moines area, a native of Grand Junction.
Burial of the cremains were to be at a later date. Hamilton’s Funeral Home near Highland Memory Gardens in Des Moines was in charge of arrangements.
Andy E. McComb, 76, died August 28, 2011. He was born December 20, 1934 in Grand Junction, the son of Andy and Mae (Winchell) McComb. He graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1953. After graduation he began working at Des Moines Grain Inspection as a federal grain inspector.
In February 1955 Andy married Dorothy Whitsell, and in 1958 his job took them to Iowa Falls. In the late l970’s Andy became an owner of the company, now known as Central Iowa Grain Inspection Service. Andy loved his profession, took pride in every aspect of the business, and retired in 200l after nearly 50 years.
While living in Iowa Falls, Andy and Dorothy raised their three children, Doug, Angie and Daryn. In 2004 Andy relocated to the Des Moines area where he met his second wife, Sherryl Colwill, and they were married in 2007.
Andy joined the U S Naval Reserve when he was a Junior in High School and served a total of eight years in the Reserve. His five brothers all served in the U S Navy, but since Andy’s period of service was during peace time he was not called to active duty.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Francis and Gail.
He is survived by his wife, Sherryl, his children, Doug McComb, Angie ( John) Cushing and Daryn (Carla) McComb; five grandchildren: Cassie McComb, Mackenzie and Cameron Stevens and Wesley and Linley McComb; two sisters: Doris Stewart and Marion Hocke and three brothers: Daryl (Lois) McComb, Kay (Emmy Lou) McComb and Richard (Billie Jo) McComb. He is also survived by five stepchildren and eleven step-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.
Andy was a loving and generous man who was very active in his church and volunteered to many worthy causes such as Habitat for Humanity and working at the Missions for the Homeless.
His hobbies included everything from working on cars, fishing and hunting with his boys, bowling and golfing, along with his love of gardening. Andy always loved to travel, whether on hot summer vacations with his family, business conventions across the country, visiting family and friends in other states, or the one day trips to Missouri for his favorite Missouri peaches.
Andy will be greatly missed by his family; children, grandchildren, wife and many colleagues and friends.
