Joyce Smotherman

Joyce Jean Smotherman, daughter of Glenn Leslie Woods and Vildren Vernice Perkins Woods, was born August 17, 1952 in Jefferson and died May 14, 2006 at her home in Rippey at the age of 53.

Joyce grew up in Rippey where she attended grade school. She attended high school in Perry, making Perry her home before returning to Rippey in the mid 1990’s. Joyce was the mother of one daughter, Tabatha.

Joyce worked as a waitress locally and in Des Moines where she was employed in the cafeteria at Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Co. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Rippey and a former member of the Moose Lodge. Joyce loved to play on her computer. She also loved going gambling at Prairie Meadows. Joyce treasured her time with her family and friends, especially sharing a special meal together that she had prepared.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her daughter, Tabatha (Dennis) Jackson of Prescott, Arizona; two grandchildren, Tasha and Tanner Jackson; brothers, Glenn (Janis) Woods, Jr. of Freemont and Tom Woods of Perry; sister, Janice (Ben) Anderson of Zearing; aunt, Mae Perkins of Grimes; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services, under the direction of Hastings funeral Home in Perry, were held Saturday afternoon in Perry.

Pastor Deb Parkison of the Rippey United Methodist Church administered words of comfort at the service.

Honorary casket bearers were Denny Woods, Rhonda Brown, Tommy Shadle, Rodney Woods, Tasha Jackson, Tanner Jackson, Bobbi Madison, and Glenda Hadsell
