Funeral Services were held Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 10:00 a. m. in the Rippey United Methodist Church for LeRoy “Shorty” Overman.

Words of Comfort were given by Pastors Deb Parkison and Clare DeBoef of the Rippey United Methodist Church. Marjorie Vannatta was organist and pianist was Dolores Summy and the hymns, “The Old Rugged Cross”, “I Am Thine O Lord” and “In The Garden” were played.

Honorary casket bearers were Paul Bardole, Bill Overman, Bob Overman, Diane Overman, Gary Schmidt, LaVere Derry, and Roy Bardole.

Casket bearers were Randall Overman, Michael Overman, John Yingling, Rick Liebich, James Odin and Philip Roberts.

LeRoy Randall Overman, son of Bertram Overman and Fredda Howe Overman, was born Aug 5, 1917 in Waukee, Iowa, and died March 3, 2007 at the Iowa Soldiers Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, at the age of 89 years, 6 months and 28 days.

LeRoy graduated from Waukee High School and attended Barber College in Des Moines. While attending barber school, he met Eloise Templeton of Rippey, who was a student at Thompson Beauty School. They were married in 1940 in Rippey. LeRoy and Eloise were proud parents of Barbara and Randall.

LeRoy was inducted into the Army and served as a Medic in Germany. He purchased the barber shop in Rippey in 1945 and barbered until August of 2005.

LeRoy was a revered citizen of Rippey. Although he was nicknamed “Shorty” he was a giant among men. Memories abound of his friendliness, kindness, and generosity. He was a faithful member of the Rippey United Methodist Church where he ushered and taught adult Sunday School for many years. There is a room at church lovingly called LeRoy’s room. He had served as Mayor of Rippey. LeRoy enjoyed his many years of membership in the Rippey Lions and the Kinkead Martin American Legion Post. He also had enjoyed baseball and riding horses in earlier years.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents and twin brother Leslie. He is survived by his wife Eloise; daughter Barbara Yingling and her husband John of Mequon, Wisconsin; son Randall of Perry, Iowa; one grandson Michael Overman and his wife Sara of Johnston, Iowa; and their sons Noah and Conner; a niece and two nephews; other relatives and many many friends.
