Raymond Lee Kenney, son of John Fletcher Kenney and Lucy Edith Hallam Kenney, was born August 12, 1910 in Boone County near Angus, Iowa, and died September 16, 2006 at the Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in Perry, Iowa at the age of 96 years, one month and four days.
Raymond started school in Angus, attending until the third grade and then attended school in Perry to the sixth grade. He then was a student in Rippey, graduating in 1928.
Raymond married Juanita O’Connell at the Greene County Fair in Jefferson September 8, 1933. They were parents of two sons: Jack and Rom. The family farmed around Rippey on rented farms except for one year in California. They then moved to their farm in 1948. Raymond and Juanita lived on the farm until 1994 when Juanita’s health required more care. Raymond moved to the Rowley Memorial Masonic Home with Juanita and after her death in 1995, decided to stay there. He was loved by all and especially loved by those who lived at the home and those who worked there. Raymond was active and assisted in any way he could.
Raymond was a member of the Rippey United Methodist Church and was a long time, loyal member of the Elmo Masonic Lodge #465 A.F. and A.M. in Rippey.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, wife Juanita; brothers Claude and George and sisters Gladys and Ruth. He is survived by his sons: Jack and wife Judy of Indianola, Iowa; Tom and his wife, Marilyn of Ames, Iowa; 8 grandchildren: Doreen Halverson and husband Dana of Slater, Iowa; Sidney Kenney and wife Ella of California; Raymond Kenney of Kansas; Melvin Kenney of Montana; Kim Crist and husband Scott of Iowa City, Iowa; Kevin Kenney and wife Meghan of Iowa City, Iowa; Kory Kenney of Ames, Iowa; Kim Naberhaus and husband Tim of Indianola; 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Services were held September 19, 2006 at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry with words of comfort by Pastor Clare DeBoef and Pastor Deb Parkison of the Rippey United Methodist Church. Interment was at the Rippey Cemetery.
