Reverend Edward L. Sullivan, 79, died suddenly Saturday morning, January 10, 2004 at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 PM Wednesday from the Estel Perrin Avey Funeral home, with Pastor Jim Hartman officiating. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery with Military rites by the Harry C. Harter Post 839. Memorials may be directed to the Hartland Friends Church.
Edward was born in Marshalltown on May 7, 1924, the son of Leonard and Helen Prochaska Sullivan. On January 15, 1942 in Minneapolis Minnesota he was united in Marriage to Doris Brace of Union Iowa. Doris survives Ed. There are two sons surviving, Bill and wife Ann Sullivan of Coralville, and Mike and wife Pat of Knoxville. A daughter, Jane of Des Moines also is a survivor. In addition there are two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents.
Raised and educated in Marshalltown he graduated from high school where he played musical instruments with several local bands. He then joined the US Navy and served during WWII, receiving the Purple Heart in the South Pacific. While in the service he played the saxophone with the Tommy Dorsey Navy Band. After the war, he graduated from the University of Iowa and later received graduate degrees from Drake University and the University of Northern Iowa.
For many years he as a band instructor in schools in Iowa, then becoming an ordained Minister in the Iowa Methodist Conference in 1968. He served in the communities of Grant, Keokuk, Rippey, Clinton and Hudson before retiring. After moving back to Marshalltown he filled the pulpit at the Hartland Friends Church for many years.
Rev Sullivan was a member of the Untied Methodist Church, Harry C. Harter Post 839 VFW and the Iowa Conference of Methodist Churches.
