Rippey area, and Greene County native, Sterling Young, was inducted Sunday, August 20, 2017, into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. Sterling started his 4-H career with the Washington Winners 4-H Club at the age of nine.
Sterling was nominated by his home Cerro Gordo 4-H family. Sterling was a local 4-H leader for 12 years in Cerro Gordo County. He served for 30 years as the Superintendent of the North Iowa Livestock Division. He served for 18 years as a board member for the Extension Service and also served as a board member of the Iowa 4-H Foundation Board.
As an Iowa State graduate, Sterling has been a long time manager for Hertz Farms, first in Mount Vernon, and for many years in Mason City. He plans to retire sometime in the near future. He has been very active in Cerro Gordo and Iowa agricultural issues.
Attending the event included his wife Vicki, sons Brandon and Travis (Laura) from the Minneapolis area, Brothers, Stephen (Carol) and Rev. Mark (Jan) Young, and Cousin, Robert (Lyn) Huber, from Cedar Falls. Sterling was honored to have several of his Hertz colleagues in attendance.
Sterling was encouraged in his 4-H participation by his parents Byron and Mavis Young of Greene County
