Iowa has a colorful history from early days including the Underground Railroad in Iowa noted in an early book, Necessary Courage and another new book, Iowa Confederates in the Civil War by David Connon. There were a number of slave owners living in Dubuque before the Civil War.  Seventy-six men connected to Iowa fought for the Confederacy or worked in the government. Their experiences included disease, imprisonment, desertion, and other adventures. In the fall,     Mr. Conon will be presenting a program under the sponsorship from the Greene County Historical Society and the Jefferson Public Library and in the connection with the Iowa Humanities program. Check out the book from the Rippey Library and other new books. Copies of the Iowa in the Confederates books will also be available when Mr. Conan shares his program.
