Thanksgiving Traditions

Philip and Toni Roberts thought they would “eat out” this Thanksgiving for a change of pace but when a free turkey was available with the ham they bought, plans changed to a home cooked meal for just the two of them (after all it was just a 12 pound turkey)! Well, this twosome soon became seven when daughter Wendy and husband Tony Burkett and girls, Josie, Addie and Lily of Winterset accepted a late invite to come for dinner.
Grandma Toni soon learned that a change from the traditional stuffing to a new recipe for dressing would not be well received so she made both to satisfy everyone. The adults politely tasted the new dish once but it was the turkey and stuffing everyone wanted plus Grandpa’s famous “refrigerator mashed potatoes” with gravy and pumpkin pie for dessert. Wendy supplied the ubiquitous green bean casserole and a family recipe for cranberry Jello salad. Lesson learned-don’t mess with traditional family meals!
Later that afternoon the group enlarged to twelve with daughter Lori Bardole of Rippey and grandchildren Cassie Bardole of Jefferson and Schyler and Lauren Bardole of rural Churdan with their dog Bentley! Son Matthew of Jefferson even got to come for a few hours between his EMT shifts. It was such a beautiful day that Schyler and the younger girls had a good time playing Frisbee outside. What a day full of blessings!
