Schoolboy Soldiers of Rippey to Return Home on Memorial Day

Share

The Schoolboy Soldiers of Rippey are returning home to the Old Rippey Cemetery.

At 10:00am on Memorial Day, a reenactment of the Civil War Schoolboy Soldiers of Rippey will march down the road toward the Old Rippey Cemetery in full uniform, drawing attention to one of Greene County’s most remarkable stories. The history centers on 32 young students and two teachers from the first school established in Greene County who left their classrooms in 1862 to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Their journey, forgotten for many generations, has recently been rediscovered through the efforts of local historians, students, and community supporters dedicated to preserving their legacy.

Today, the Old Rippey Cemetery stands as a reminder of the community’s early history and the sacrifices made by those who served. A permanent memorial honoring the Schoolboy Soldiers of Rippey and their teachers who answered the call to serve will consist of a large painted rock on Main Street in Rippey and a monument marking their trek.

We look forward to seeing you on Memorial Day.
